Hearing that you’ve not done something as well as you thought you had can be difficult, but it need not be.

The very fact that the person letting you know that they’re not happy with whatever it is you’ve done means that they still care enough about you to give you the opportunity to either rectify the problem or the learning so that you won’t make the same mistake again in the future. They are in fact giving you the gift of their opinion and the chance to have a discussion.

If you can start with this frame of mind then you will find yourself asking exactly what the nature of the grievance is with your performance and most likely you’ll end up learning something that you didn’t know before that will help you the next time you’re faced with a similar task, challenge, or situation. Alternatively your probing may uncover that the person providing the feedback is unaware of something that you know. In this case you may potentially be able to help them understand why you made the choice that they’re unhappy about provided you make sure that they know that you have heard what they wanted to say to you first.

In any event be sure to listen calmly and clarify exactly what the feedback is no matter how upset or animated they may be. Also be sure to thank the person afterwards. If you can do this you’ll find that both your superiors and reports will engage with you more freely. You’ll also gain a reputation of being someone who’s a quality operator who can take his/her lumps and moves on quickly to getting on with the job.

So which would you be rather known as; A defensive person who’s hard to get a long with, or the person in the last paragraph?
